right direction for an okay weekend. today though low clouds. really cold temps in the north bay. i'll have more coming up in five minutes. highs today cooler low 60s. golden gate traffic will be looking good. the fog is a little bit low. we'll talk about this in a little bit. the traffic here on the san mateo bridge looks good over to the peninsula. let's go back to dave and pam. >> thank you. in the news overnight police questioning two possible suspect in a frightening incident that happened overnight. swat teams rushed to the scene after getting reports of several shots fired from a building in the south of market area. ktvu tara moriarty has been out there. she's back with the latest on what happened. >> reporter: no one knows why the two men were firing rifles from the tops of the building. some neighbors were very scared. others were angry because they were told they were not allowed

to leave their homes. they also had to shut down a major freeway over there where you could see the lamps. the two men started shooting at the top of this building and then jumped rooftops all the way over until they got to a dark colored building with swat teams eventually forced them down. the two suspects climbed down the fire escape where they were eventually taken into custody around 1:00 this morning. that is after a two hour stakeout on ninth street between bryant & harrison. swat teams were poised on top of several buildings as chp helicopter did a search but backed off because of the danger of being shot at. fire departments brought their ladder trucks so they could access the rooftops.

>> the swat team and the tactical team did a protective sweep of the building to make sure that the people we did have were in fact the suspects if there were not any others outstanding. >> reporter: now that sweep took nearly two hours. they believe the gunmen were firing off their weapons at random. they do not believe if they had any particular target in mind. no word on if any intoxication was involved in this incident. the two men will be facing various weapon charges including gross negligence of a discharge of a fire department. neighbor were allowed to come and go as they please. everything is back to normal and the freeway is open. we're live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. 6:03. san jose police are investigating that city's first homicide of 2012. police were called to alexander avenue in east san jose about 8:30 last night. they found a man that had been shot several times. he later died at the hospital.

no suspects have been identified yet. police are investigating the possibility that the shooting was gang related. san francisco sheriff elect is the focus of a criminal investigation. police are look into a possible incident of domestic violence between ross mirkarimi and his wife last weekend. one neighbor went to police saying mirkarimi's wife confided about a heated argument tied to alarminger pattern of abuse. so far mirkarimi has declined comment but his wife denies the neighbors claim. he will be sworn in as san francisco's new sheriff on sunday. state assemblywoman mary hayashi is due back in a san francisco court woman. a judge is expected to set a state for her preliminary hearing on her felony shoplifting case. they arrested her last october. the east bay democrat is accused of stealing leather pants and other items that were worth about $2500.

a judge has ordered two suspected gang members to stand trial in a horrifying attack on a richmond woman three years ago. police say they were among four men that viciously beat and gang raped the woman while they were out vandalizing cars. one suspect is facing hate crime charges for allegedly making jokes about the victim being a lesbian during the rape. if convicted both men could get life in prison. two other defendants have pleaded guilty and scheduled to be sentenced in may. 6:05. an arraignment has been postponed for a san jose nurse for killing a woman with a machete. the attorney for 40-year-old sagal. her partner just ended her relationship after a history of domestic violence. vallejo police are planning

to install more surveillance cameras around the city. police lieutenant said they will be placed at key intersections and high crime areas and ultimately in police cars as well. the 12 new cameras are being paid for by grants and through the police department budget. six cameras are already up and running. the installation of the new ones could begin by the end of the month. san francisco south of market neighborhood is running out of macon office space. 2011 was that areas strongest leasing year since 1988. just a 3.3% vacancy rate. that is after a fourth quarter report. now of nearly 3.5 million square feet in south of market just 112,000 of it ask vacant and ready for occupancy. the city is taking proposals to add space on top of existing buildings. hundreds of jobs will be

cut by a california state agency this spring. the bay area will be effected. 1400 jobs will be cut by the state insurance fund. the contra costa times says 480 of those jobs are here in the bay area. they include 256 jobs in planeon. 130 in vacaville, 60 in santa vow is a, and 36 in san jose. the state compensation insurance fund is the largest provider of workers compensation. the december jobs report just released about a half hour ago was better than expected it shows the unemployment rate fell to 8.5%. that is the lowest since february of twain. coming up we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with what republican candidate mitt romney had to say this morning about president obama's efforts at job creation. reports of possible cat poisonings in pleasant hill are making pet owners very nervous.

at least three cats were recently found dead apparently poisoned. now we're checking in with the contra cost -- contra costa animal services to see if they are investigating this case. we have a high surf advisory in effect for the entire northern california coast. these are live pictures. we're out there along the beach in pacifica. the national weather service says we may see 16-foot waves. the weather service also says the high surf may bring a threat of erosion. especially in areas like san francisco's great highway. you are being warned stay off beaches and off the rocks along the coast. now that high wave warning comes on the very same day as the opening ceremony for the maverick surf contest. the high surf is a way new safety measures are being put in place. almost two years ago 13 people were hurt at mavericks when two big surges of water crashed on

the shore. last night there was a meeting held to talk about safety changes at this years companiation to keep that from happening again. >> all the surfers everybody will be in the water. the judges. the damage a people will be in the water. we are moving for the observation of the event to be at a festival. >> now if you want to be a spectator you will be able to watch the event at the oceano hotel. they will have a live feed there. sheriffs deputies and private security will patrol the beaches to keep people from watching from the beach or from cliffs. the window at mavericks is now open. it will stay open until march 31st. in orinda electricity is expected to be restored at any moment for hundreds of people. we want to show you new video. that is where pg&e says a car hit a power pole shortly before 10:30 last night.

rapid city south dakota was 73 degrees. which was warmer than miami, florida. miami did not hit 70s. there has not been an inch of snow. that is a record. it's dry here and other places. the only thing i want to mention here the one forecast model did drop a little low on us next tuesday and wednesday. may not be a rain free week. so that is the only outlier. we'll see. other side the weekend will be breezy to windy. there is plenty of systems out here. thattives us the higher -- that gives us the higher surf. today it will be cooler. the high surf advisory goes until 6:00 tonight. high tide 8:49:00 a.m. this morning. after tonight things will start to decrease as we go into the weekend. cold out there for some.

time now 6:15. 45 minutes ago the december jobs report came out and better than expected. ktvu alison burns in our washington, d.c. newsroom now to break it all down. alison. >> reporter: unemployment hasn't been this low since right after president obama took office. let's take a look at the numbers. the unemployment rate drops to 8.5% from 8.6% the month before. employers added about 200,000 jobs and the number of government layoffs declined. within ten minutes of the reports released, republican presidential candidate mitt romney did not give any credit to president obama. >> he failed to put america back to work. he said if you let me borrow $787 billion i will be able to keep unemployment from going above 8%. well, it went past 8% and hasn't been back since.

republican presidential candidate john huntsman. he's been campaigning heavily in new hampshire for months. even skipped the iowa caucuses to focus on new hampshire ahead of the primary there on tuesday. huntsman campaign got a boost getting an endorsement from the boston globe. that is pretty significant. that pay sir published in the same state where front runner mitt romney was governor for four years. there are now reports out of iowa that the vote count from tuesday's iowa caucuses may be inaccurate. the iowa republican party announced that mitt romney won the caucuses by eight votes ahead of rick santorum. however a man that says he helped count the ballots at one of the precincts says romney only received two votes there. not the 22 reported on the republican parties website. now rick santorum is not asking for a recount. he says he's been told of ere issues with the -- told of other issues with the vote

give way to mostly sunny skies. 50s and 60s today instead of the upper 60s. extended forecast always has your weekend in view. shows a little breezy conditions. it will be dry. >> thank you, steve. this year ford will be the latest auto maker to open a research lab. this morning ford announced it will open its lab in stanford. about 15 people will work there initially. some will be hired locally. others from company head quarters in michigan will be rotated through. some of the work will include testing apps designed by independent programmers that could be used in ford cars and trucks. general motors is advising owners of the volt electric cars to return them to the dealership for repairs. gm engineers plan to install more steel to protect them if there is a crash. three volt batteries caught fire after government crash test last year. the free repairs will be done on all 8,000-volts currently on

right now traffic moves pretty well in san francisco on northbound 101. no closures anymore and westbound bay bridge traffic also looks good. the pentagon is investigating whether or not film makers were given access to classified details of the killing of osama bin laden. that is after republican new york congressman peter cane raised concerns. kathryn is making a movie about the hunt for bin laden. white house officials have denied leaking secret details about the raid. this steve jobs action

to you. thank you for joining us. it is a friday. it's january 6th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. time is 6:30. in the news for you right now topping our news sat 6:30 overnight gunfire. police swat teams rushed to the scene. there were several reports of shots fired from a building on ninth street. tara moriarty is all over this. she is live at the scene with all the details. tara. >> reporter: police had this neighborhood in lock down for nearly four hours. they even shut down part of the freeway which you can see beyond my shoulder. those headlights you see there are folks coming off the central freeway off ramp. if we pan over to the right the apartment building is where police say two men were perched firing off their rifles. they made their way over. they rumped from rooftop to rooftop until they got to this dark building here and swat teams eventually forced them

down. >> reporter: the two suspects climbed down the fire escape where they were eventually taken into custody around 1:00 this morning. that is after a two hour stakeout on ninth street between bryant and harrison. swat teams were poised on top of several buildings. chp helicopter got involved. tactical units and a fire department. neighbors couldn't believe how massive the stakeout was. >> i heard shots were fired off. i heard about three shots. and then kept walking a little further. heard about four more rounds go off. officer told me to go back inside. >> it appears it probably was going to be an act of just negligence where they were shooting out randomly. doesn't appear anyone was targeted or any specific target. >> reporter: police won't say if drugs or alcohol were involved but the two men will be facing various weapons

charges including gross negligence of the discharge of a firearm. after police arrested the suspect the squad team did a protective sweep of the building. it wasn't until 3:00 that neighbors were actually allowed to come and go as they please. we will be talking to sfpd to see if we can get the identity of those suspects. former east bay real estate agent who was convicted of stealing may have been caught doing it again by a web cam. in late november police say this image of douglas john was captured bay 12-year-old girl's laptop. she set up a web cam to see what went on in her room during an open house. it shows him going through her personal belongs. he was arrested after the girl showed the image to the real estate agent? charge of the sale and in march of 2010 he was a real estate agent himself and arrested for stealing items from a home he was selling. oakland woman was able to

safely escape after her house caught fire. that fire started just before 8:00 last night. on a home near harbor road. fire investigators say 100 birds died in that fire. they were able to rescue a few of the birds. our time 6:33. the woman charged with murdering nursing student michelle le is due back in court this morning. giselle esteban is due to enter a plea. she is charged with killing michelle le who's body was found in september after a four month search. esteban was scheduled to enter a plea last month but her lawyers ask for more time to go over evidence. an alameda county grand jury indicted esteban on murder charges. police will be searching a sunnyvale neighborhood today in hopes of getting information on a hit and run driver that killed a pedestrian. 72-year-old benjamin lynn was hit by a mini van as he walked

across the intersection of reid salve and sekoya drive. the driver turned left on a solid green light and hit mr. lynn that had the walk signal. witnesses didn't get a good look at the driver but described the mini van as either black or a dark colored car. a former school bus driver in san francisco is in jail accused of sexually abusing two special needs students. on wednesday 55-year-old roberto marty was ordered to stand trial. he allegedly assaulted an 11- year-old special needs girl in 2004 and another 11-year-old special needs girl last year. police say the incidents happened on the bus before the students were dropped off at home. there are concerns there may be more victims out there. >> does anyone have their child

aboard this bus with this bus driver driving them, we are asking them to contact the police department if they believe their child was a victim. >> marty reportedly drove routes all over the city. starting in 1994 to last april. the first student bus company in ohio said they passed the control background check. a funeral is being held for a five-year-old boy shot in oakland. gabriel martinez junior was killed last friday night by his father's taco truck. police do not believe martinez was the intended target. he is about six feet tall with short hair and a light complex. anyone with information is asked to call police. this afternoon family and friends of fremont mayor bob wasserman will say their final good buys. funeral services will start at

has issued this high surf advisory. they are calling for sweals between -- swells between 13 feet and 16 feet. that could translate into sneaker waves. the rogue waves that sneak up on folks. also rip currents could be an issue as well. some spots you could see potential beach erosion. especially when you talk about the western facing beaches. that's where you will see those very large breaking waves. according to the northerly weather service. dangerous conditions if you plan to be anywhere near the water around the bay area and high surf advisory will remain in effect throughout the day today and into 6:00 tonight. live this morning in pacifica alex savidge. police in berkeley have outraged many drivers by giving out a ton of tickets at one location. that has provoked action from a parking vigilante. that story is coming up on mornings on 2. 6:46. almost a year after that mass

shooting in tucson, arizona new details are coming out about the man charged with that crime. jared loughner is accused of killing six people and wounding congresswoman gabrielle giffords. back in 2009 congresswoman giffords office received a suspicious letter. it featured a similar sentence structure typical of the way jade laugh never writes. that letter was destroyed and never prove to come from laugh never. officials say loughner tried to send a letter to a tv station saying that congresswoman giffords was today and his lawyer was lying to him. a candle light vigil will be held in walnut creek for the victims of that mass shooting. it's sponsored by the mt. diablo peace and justice center. it will be at 5:30 tonight. an excessive numbers of

he was sleeping at a shopping center on december 20th. since then two other men have been killed as they slept. police believe the killer is driving a white toyota corolla. you see it right there at the top left of your screen. the investigation of the los angeles arson suspect is spreading worldwide. canadian police are looking at 24-year-old harry buckheart as a possible suspect for fires in vancouver where he lived at one time. he is also being investigated by for links to a duplex fire that caused a lot of damage in his native germany. still not clear if he was in either place when the fire os curred. more employers especially hospitals say they won't hire people who smoke. some of the new tobacco free hiring policies called for not hiring job applicants that test positive for any nicotine use whether it's cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, or nicotine patches. they are designed to promote
